Guwahati: In a smart move by the Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday at the budget session announced smartphones to 8000 plus Gaon Burahs (village headmen) in the region.

Addressing the budget session, Minister Sarma said that Gaon Burahs play a major role in maintaining the peace and brotherhood in rural Assam, thus, as a mark of appreciation of the critical role we propose to provide them with smart mobile phones.

He further stated that smartphones would ensure that the village elders are able to be in touch with the district administration and will aid in effective communication in times of emergency and crisis.

It may be mentioned that the Finance Ministry had allotted Rs 4 crore for this initiative in this year’s budget.

Apart from announcing the Smart Phones to the Gaon Burahs, Government will soon form a committee to study this age-old institution and draw up a list an action plan to re-invigorate this institution to keep pace to the modern era.
