Assam: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Attends DU Convocation, to Visit Manipur Later

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar graced the 21st Convocation Ceremony of Dibrugarh University and delivered the convocation address.

GUWAHATI: On Wednesday, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar arrived in Dibrugarh to attend the 21st Convocation Ceremony of Dibrugarh University. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Rameswar Teli, and Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu also grace the occasion.

Upon arrival at the Dibrugarh airport, VP Dhakhar and his wife Dr Sudesh Dhankhar and other dignitaries were welcomed by Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In his speech, Vice President said "It is great pride that we recall the heroic valor of King Prithu Jalpeshwer of Kamrup who defeated Bakhtiyar Khilji, the destroyer of Nalanda University. We also recall with honor the legendary Ahom warrior Lachit Borphukan who defeated Mughal armies in the famous Battle of Saraighat."

After attending the convocation Vice President Dhakhar is set to visit Manipur on his tour to the Dhanamanjuri University in Imphal. VP Dhakhar will also interact with students and faculty of Dhanamanjuri University. He will also take part in the plantation program at the university.

The interaction session will also feature faculty and scientists from Manipur University, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, the Central Agricultural University, the National Institute of Technology, the National Sports University, the Institute of Bio-Resources & Sustainable Development, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, and others.

On Wednesday at 8:30 am, around 1400 Dibrugarh University students participated in a procession that entered the convocation venue. In the meantime, Dibrugarh's security has been stepped up in anticipation of the Vice President's visit.

On August 2022, Jagdeep Dhakhar took oath as the 14th Vice President of India. He had previously served as the Governor of West Bengal. In 1989 Dhankhar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu constituency.

Jagdeep Dhankhar received 528 of the 725 votes cast, giving him a 346-vote victory in the race for vice president of India.

Margret Alva, the opposition candidate, received 182 votes, while 15 votes were declared invalid.
