Bangladeshi National Arrested in Guwahati’s Hatigaon, Case Registered under FT Act, 1946

Guwahati: The City Police in Guwahati on Thursday evening arrested Bangladeshi national in Hatigaon area.

The arrested Bangladeshi national was identified as Suman Mia, of Sulamganja in Bangladesh.

Speaking to The Sentinel Digital, the officer in charge, Hatigaon Police Station, Inspector Ratan Das said, “During our interrogation, the arrested Bangladeshi national had confessed before us that he travelled to Guwahati along with three more people in search of employment.”

OC Das also informed that the all the four Bangladeshi nationals had arrived in Guwahati with the help of brokers.

As per police information, the accused had spent a few nights at Guwahati Railway Station, however, came down roaming to Hatigaon area today evening. Later, on suspicion, the locals informed the police.

The arrest of Bangladeshi national in the city ahead of the publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) has raised a big concern amongst several sections of people.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the arrested Bangladeshi National (Case No. 406/19) under section 14 A (b) of the Foreigners Act, 1946.

If any person enters into or stays in the territory of India without the valid documents required for such entry or for such stay, as the case may be, under the provisions of any order made under this Act or any direction given in pursuance shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than two years, but may extend to eight years and shall also be liable to fine which shall not be less than ten thousand rupees but may extend to fifty thousand rupees; and if he has entered into a bond in pursuance of clause (f) of sub-section (2) of section 3, his bond shall be forfeited, and any person bound thereby shall pay the penalty thereof, or show cause to the satisfaction of the convicting Court why such penalty should not be paid by him.
