Boxer Nikhat Zareen to face MC Mary Kom at trail ahead 2020 Tokyo Olympics Qualifiers

Guwahati: Finally an official media report confirmed the fact that young and aspirant boxer Nikhat Zareen will be facing six-time world champion MC Mary Kom in a selection trial to decide who will represent India in the 51 kg category for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers to be held in January 2020.

The trials are expected to take place at the end of December, later this year.

The Secretary-General of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has also confirmed the above fact to the media earlier on last Thursday.

It may be mentioned that a meeting at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by BFI office bearers, SAI officials including director-general Sandeep Pradhan, an official from Sports Ministry and the two foreign coaches Raffaele Bergamasco and Santiago Nieva.

Kowli said the Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh was informed of the decision through office staff on Friday, 8 November. He was quick to explain that it wasn't a new decision, but just a reconfirmation of an earlier decision.

It is quite interesting to the know the fact that as per a BFI statement, in the women's category, only the gold and the silver medallist at World Championship 2019 will qualify directly for the first Olympic qualifier to be held in Wuhan in China, whereas for the men's category, all the medallists of AIBA World Championship 2019 will be sent directly to the first Olympic qualifier.
