Guwahati: Vice-Admiral M.P. Awati (retd.), the commander of a naval unit of the Eastern Fleet to play a key role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war and led to the destruction of an enemy submarine, is no more. The freedom fighter passed away at his hometown near Satara in Maharashtra on Sunday. Awati dies at an age of 91.
As described by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, M.P. Awati is the icon in the naval history. She tweeted, “Vice Admiral M P Awati (Retd) #PVSM, #VirChakra passed away; was the commanding officer of a naval unit of the Eastern Fleet, Dec’71. Captured three enemy ships carrying contraband goods. His actions led to the destruction of an enemy submarine. An icon in naval history. My homage.”

Sunil Lanba, the Navy chief too condoled and said Vice-Admiral Awati’s death marked the end of an era. He posted in his Twitter handle, “A giant of a man, one of our tallest heroes and greatest icons.”
