After seven long years, respite comes to Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi after a Delhi court issued death sentences to the four convicts involved in the 2012 brutal rape and murder of a young girl in Delhi. The convicts will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail in Delhi.
The judges pronounced the order after hearing a plea that sought the issue of 'black warrant' against the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case.
Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi hailed the verdict. She said, "My daughter has got justice. Execution of the four convicts will empower the women of the country. This decision will strengthen the trust of people in the judicial system." Her father Badrinath Singh also expressed his happiness, " I am happy with the court's decision. The convicts will be hanged at 7 am on 22nd January; This decision will instill fear in people who commit such crimes."
In December 2019, the Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed the Nirbhaya case convict Pawan Gupta's plea claiming to be a juvenile at the time of the offense.
Justice Suresh Kait also imposed Rs 25,000 fine on Gupta's advocate A.P. Singh, who didn't appear, for playing hide and seek in the court. The court also asked the Bar Council of Delhi to take appropriate action against the advocate for filing false documents.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had also ruled that Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder convict Akshay Kumar Singh's age, socio-economic background, unblemished antecedents and chances to reform fade into insignificance as the offense committed by him falls under "rarest of rare" cases, and therefore the death penalty is confirmed.
