NRC hearing ahead of Final Publication creates sensation in Biswanath

Biswanath: At a time when the entire state is waiting for the final publication of the NRC on August 31st, 2019, there are reports surfacing in the media that several NRC Seva Kendras are conducting hearings at their registered offices in Biswanath district.

Here is a video footage of NRC Seva Kendra at Biswanath’s Hakumota Block Development office where several people from various places of Assam have been allegedly harassed in the name of NRC hearing.

Speaking before the media, a woman on Thursday questioned the NRC authority on the authenticity of the National Register of Citizens as their names were already been published in the draft NRC list earlier. “We have been summoned for several times for NRC hearing, although, our names were published in the draft NRC list, the NRC officials have been harassing poor people like us on several instances in the name of NRC hearings,” said the woman.

Meanwhile, AAMSU slammed the NRC authority for holding NRC hearings ahead of the final NRC publication.

The complete draft of NRC, containing names of 28,983,677 out of 32,991,384 applicants, was published on July 30 last year.

Around 40.07 lakh people were left out from the complete draft of NRC and nearly 36 lakh people have filed their claims for inclusion their names in the final NRC. An Additional Draft Exclusion list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on June 26 last consisting of 1,02,462 persons.

About National Register of Citizens

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens. The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India.

The NRC is now being updated in Assam to include the names of those persons (or their descendants) who appear in the NRC, 1951, or in any of the Electoral Rolls[4] up to the midnight of 24 March 1971 or in any one of the other admissible documents issued up to midnight of 24 March 1971, which would prove their presence in Assam or in any part of India on or before 24 March 1971.
