Two Coolies at Lumding Railway Station apprehended for stealing products from parcels

Lumding: A viral video triggered sensation at Lumding Railway Station, after few Coolies (labour) caught on camera at the station for allegedly stealing products from the parcels and the courier consignments bags which are generally received at the railway station.

As per the video footage reportedly captured by a passenger reveals how these coolies (labours) usually stole products out of the parcels/ courier bags and stitched them back together later.

Meanwhile, the matter got viral on the social media, accordingly, the Railway Authority at the Lumding Station and Government Railway Police apprehended two coolies (labours) for allegedly stealing products from the courier or parcel bags.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Government Railway Police.

About Lumding Railway Station

Lumding railway division is one of the five railway divisions under Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways. This railway division was formed on 15 January 1958 and its headquarter is located at Lumding in the state of Assam of India.

Katihar railway division, Alipurduar railway division, Tinsukia railway division and Rangiya railway division are the other four railway divisions under NFR Zone headquartered at Maligaon, Guwahati.

About Coolies

The word coolie, meaning a labourer, has a variety of other implications and is sometimes regarded as offensive or a pejorative, depending upon the historical and geographical context. It is similar, in many respects, to the Spanish term peón, although both terms are used in some countries, with slightly differing implications.

The word originated in South Asia in the 17th century and meant day labourer but since the 20th century, the word means porters at railway stations.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, coolie was usually a term implying an indentured labourer from South Asia, South East Asia or China.

However, coolie is now regarded as derogatory and/or a racial slur in the Caribbean, Africa, Oceania, North America, South America, Southeast Asia and Europe – in reference to people from Asia. This is particularly so in South Africa, East Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Mauritius, Fiji, and the Malay Peninsula. In 2000, the parliament of South Africa enacted the Promotion of Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, which has among its primary objectives the prevention of hate speech terms such as coolie (koelie).
