MUMBAI: One of the largest e-commerce brands in the country has decided to reduce its workforce further and this step is likely to affect over 500 employees in the country across multiple verticles. This is the latest round of layoffs as announced by the brand’s Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy in the month of March. Over 9000 employees of the brand have lost their jobs as of now.

According to reports, the layoffs have been carried out across the web services, human resources, and support departments of Amazon India. Many of the affected employees are said to be part of the e-com brand’s global teams functioning from India. The CEO had mentioned in a memo posted online about the 9000 layoffs and said that the decisions were based on an analysis of priorities and the volatile economy.

Amazon is one of the many brands including tech companies which have laid off large parts of their workforce in the wake of a slowdown in the economic conditions. A sharp decline in the E-commerce sector growth in the past few months has also been termed as a major reason for the layoffs. A decrease in the Indian online shopping trends has been termed as another key reason for the layoffs in the country. The first round of layoffs took place at the beginning of the year and caused more than 18000 employees across the world to lose their jobs with the major ecom brand.

Several other brands including social media giants Meta, and other tech giants Microsoft and Alphabet also laid off a large part of their workforce in recent times. It however remains to see if these measures continue or come to an end in the recent future as a large number of these brands are now engaged in the race for mastery in AI field.
