Bishnupriya Manipuri Bodies Serve Ultimatum to Cachar DC Laya Madduri

SILCHAR: Hundreds of leaders and activists under the banner of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Students’ Union (NBMSU) and Bishnupriya Manipuri Ganasangram Parishad (BMGSP) to day hit the streets of this town and after marching down, raising slogans, assembled before the office of the Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri, and submitted a memorandum to her on twin demands. But before that they held protest demonstration with banners in their hands, highlighting the pressing demands. And with that, the organizations also served an ultimatum on the district administration to initiate measures for acceding to their demands.

NBMSU and BMGSP demanded completion of survey on the community in order to obtain authentic data on their social, economic and educational backwardness for inclusion in the Central Government OBC list. The memorandum in this connection referred to the communication from the Assam Backward Classes Commission dated January 9, 2017. Their memoranda of March 16, 2016 and August 16, 2019 to the Prime Minister were also mentioned.

Gourav Rajkumar, President, NBMSU, said their demand for OBC status is long pending for which their organisations have staged dharna before the Parliament in 2017. He added to say the National Commission for Backward Classes directed the Assam Backward Commission to make an enquiry on the basis of the parameters enlisted in the Indra Sawhney judgement to have authentic data with a view to justifying their inclusion in OBC list.

Birkumar Sinha, organising secretary, regretted that the Assam Backward Classes Commission sat tight on the communication of the central body. After two years, it issued communication to the Deputy Commissioners of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi to conduct the survey.The government of Assam allocated a fund of Rs 49 lakh to cause the survey.

But, nothing of the sort till date has happened and this became clear when the leaders of both the oganisations met the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on September 20. The Deputy Commissioner failed to furnish any information which disappointed them sorely. Almost 5 years have passed and this has made them restive also. Finding no way out, both the organisations served an ultimatum on the DC to cause survey within three months. After that they would go for agitation. They have also demanded inclusion of names of all those left out of NRC belonging to Bishnupriya Manipuri community who are indigenous people.
