Lawyers' Coordination Committee Constituted for High Court Bench at Silchar

Silchar: The newly constituted Barak Valley Lawyers' Coordination Committee (BVLCC) comprising the Bar and Advocate Associations of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi has decided to carry forward the long outstanding demand for the High Court Bench at Silchar. This was stated before the mediapersons at a press meet here on Monday addressed by senior most advocate Anil Chandra Dey, president of the Barak Valley Lawyers' Coordination Committee. Dey said in order to have a coordinated and consolidated move the coordination committee was formed at a joint meeting of the lawyers of the three districts at Karimganj Bar Association's office presided over by its president Balai Chakraborty a week back.

Advocate Dey pointed out till the Bench comes up, our demand will be for a circuit bench of the High Court here. He did not find any conspiracy behind the unusual delay in establishing the Bench. He admitted this is a demand of the public which has been hanging fire for the last more than three decades. Not all litigants involved in contesting cases in High Court can afford to bear the high expenses. Majority of the people among them are economically weak, Dey said.

Both plaintiffs and defendants know well the piling up of cases in courts and the logjam and the resultant delay. Yet, cases have to be fought out. This is the reality of situation, pointed out Anil Chandra Dey. Moreover, as he pointed out, the long distance from the valley to contest the cases is also time consuming. He disclosed apart from the principal seat of High Court at Gauhati, there are three outlying benches at Kohima, Aizawl and Itanagar. Considering the high population of Barak Valley and equally high number of cases being filed in Gauhati High Court from here, a Bench is justified at Silchar.

The coordination committee will also fight for the other pressing problems and welfare of the lawyers. Among their other demands are stipend for junior lawyers, pension, gratuity, insurance and other facilities for lawyers in general. Advocate Dey said members of the coordination committee would soon meet the Chief Minister and the Chief Justice with their set of demands. Term of the 23 member coordination committee will be for three years after which a new body will be constituted. At the press-meet were also present Niladri Roy, general secretary, and Nanilakha Nag, assistant general secretary of Barak Valley Lawyers Coordination Committee (BVLCC).
