Silchar: Come September and the Manipuri youths welcome it on the first day calling it a precious day with the pledge for mobilisation of youth power and their social reformation. The objective is to create better society and promote amity and unity, encompassing all communities. It is not individualistic but pluralistic approach which All Assam Manipuri Youth Association (AAMYA) upholds and espouses. In order to make the day memorable, it organized a day long felicitation cum cultural event at Rajiv Bhavan auditorium here.
The event began with flag hoisting, followed by floral tributes to the founder president and all deceased members. It was then enlivened by group prayer and opening song. The open session presided over by Somor Luwang was addressed by Merina Oinam, Deben Sharma, Athouba Khuraijam, Salam Akash, Partha Ranjan Chakraborty, Yendrembam Kunjalal Singha, Shaikham Komlakanta and Ramakanta Singha. All of them in identical tone laid stress on collective efforts and cooperation for the betterment of youths.
Their deliberations underlined the need to rise above all mean and narrow consideration and work in close and mutual understanding with other communities in the spirit of give and take. In his keynote address, Kundal Kshetrimayum, chief advisor, AAMYA, called upon the youths and members to follow the ideals and principles of their great leaders, known for their valour, courage, supreme sacrifice, integrity, commitment, grit and determination. They come from the land of warriors who have always upheld the spirit of independence, self respect and dignity.
Kundal Kshetrimayum said they have come to Cachar two hundred years ago and since then living in peace and harmony. He reminded there was better relationship between Manipuri and Dimasa Kings and this factor brought them here from Manipur to settle down. Their life has been of hardship and struggle. Yet they have always been happy and contented. They have contributed towards the socio-economic and cultural development of the region, he pointed out.
From the platform of this event, certain resolutions adopted with the common consent of all were read out before the packed auditorium, incorporating their basic demands. These included granting them ST status, representation in assembly and parliament, protection and promotion of their culture, sports, tradition and culture, education facilities and employment. But, they rued often the Manipuris are discriminated against placements in central and state jobs and deprived of the benefits of welfare schemes. Most important Manipuris want political autonomy in the areas of their dominance and docile. The programme came to an end with felicitation to the members of outstanding achievements which followed by cultural displays by freshers, entertainment and the vote of thanks.
