SILCHAR: Amidst COVID-19 scare, the priority on development schemes and projects has not gone haywire. Since fish is a prime consumable part of the habit of a major segment of population of the valley, the Department of Fishery is taking significant steps to boost up aqua culture. A novel Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS) was introduced quite recently at Dwarbond, 20 km from here, in order to boost fishery cultivation in this valley as a part of Blue Revolution Project 2018-19. Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Fishery, laid the foundation stone of the project in the presence of Keerthi Jally IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Jagadish Das, ASP, Rafiqul Haque, Fishery Officer, BDO, ZPC member, among others.
Parimal Suklabaidya said, "For the first time, RAS is introduced in this valley under which fish cultivation will be promoted, the best method so far known. Besides increasing fish production, it will create employment opportunities. Many will get its benefit." He later on distributed fish seeds among 17 beneficiaries of Dholai constituency. He explained RAS is used in home aqua quarantine and for fish production where water exchange is limited. The Minister added to say the use of bi-filtration is required to reduce ammonic toxicity.
RAS needs other types of filtration and environmental control to maintain fresh and clean water and provide a suitable habitat for fish. Its operation is economic and commercially viable, pointed out Parimal Suklabaidya. Still researchers are engaged in conducting studies to determine a viable form of intensive aquaculture.
