Silchar: The immortal line, ‘Where the mind is without fear, the head is held high,’ was penned down by the great poet and Nobel Prize laureate, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore whose literary works took India to the world stage. A large number of socio-cultural organizations and people of Silchar celebrated Rabindra Jayanti on Thursday with full devotion and dedication. People of various organizations took out rallies and paid floral tributes to the great poet. A number of artistes recited a number of the great poet’s poems and performed Rabindra Sangeet and Rabindra Nritya.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore placed Bengali poetry among the highest echelons when he won the Nobel Prize for literature for writing ‘Geetanjali’. Rabindra Jayanti is celebrated mostly by people belonging to the Bengali community across the world. Tagore, an intellectual giant, wrote a large number of poems, dramas, stories, short stories and songs. Students of various schools celebrated Gurudev’s birthday. According to the Bengali calendar, Rabindranath Tagore was born on 25th of Baishak in Calcutta (now Kolkata) to father Maharishi Debendranath Tagore and mother Sarada Devi at Jorasanko.
