Silchar: In order to felicitate and honour Dr Rajdeep Roy, the newly elected BJP MP from Silchar, and his mother Bani Roy, a solemn function was conducted by the fraternity of Radhamadhab College in Silchar on Thursday. The function was held in the auditorium of the college in the gracious presence of former presidents of the governing bodies, educationists, professors, teachers and students. The intelligentsia showered their good wishes and blessings on Dr Rajdeep Roy and gave him a number of pieces of advice and suggestions.

In his address, Dr Rajdeep Roy said, “The moment I entered into the Central Hall of the Parliament, Nehru’s world-famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech reverberated in my mind. But at the same time, some painful images of my grandparents coming to India in 1947 owing to the partition flashed across my eyes. The pathos underlying this particular scene gave me goosebumps. I believe in working hard as there is no shortcut to success. My father late Bimolangshu Roy taught us humanity and humility. I never interfered in his works. Had he been alive, I would not have entered into politics. Since I am into it, I will aim and aspire to serve people.”

Dr Roy assured that he would seek the intervention of Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, State Education Minister, for the development of infrastructure of Radhamadhab College. “Radhamadhab College is a prestigious educational institute. I will seek the intervention of Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam, for setting up a coaching centre for civil service aspirants at the college premises,” he added to say. Bani Roy, his mother, in her speech, urged upon the people of this valley to shower their love and blessings on her son so that he can work hard and also fulfil wishes and aspirations of the people of this valley. Arunabha Bhattacharjee, assistant professor, department of English, Radhamadhab College, heaped praises on late Bimolangshu Roy, former MLA, and said that he contributed hugely to the overall growth and development of the college.

Dr Biswatosh Choudhury, head, department of Bengali, Assam University, Silchar, praised Dr Roy and also advised him to go on with his work with utmost determination and devotion. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Dr P K Sinha, principal of the College, N B Dey, president of the governing body of the College and Angshu Kumar Roy. They praised the newly elected MP and said that he is a good human being with rich values and principles. They also spoke at length regarding the contributions of late Bimolangshu Roy. He was associated with the college since its inception in 1971.
