Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy Pleads For CAB And Assam Accord

Silchar: In his maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on thanks giving to the President’s speech, Dr Rajdeep Roy Silchar MP touched on the core issues of the valley which earned him wide plaudits from people in general here. CAB was the crux of public debate which consolidated Hindu votes and helped the BJP to regain both the Lok Sabha seats of Silchar and Karimganj. Quite naturally, Dr Roy strongly pleaded for the passage of the Bill in the current session of the Parliament. This would be a penance for the partition victims. It was a turn of fortune that on the seat of the Speaker was Rajendra Agarwal, Chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee, which gave favourable report in support of the CAB. He complimented the Chairman.

Dr Rajdeep Roy at the same time spoke of safeguarding the identity and culture of Assamese people by implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in letter and spirit. The unabated influx of aliens in the State has distorted the demographic structure, putting at stake the identity and culture of indigenous people. He also spoke of the various achievements of Modi Government during its first term in office with particular reference to Assam. Most remarkable has been pulling the state out of economic stagnation through rapid connectivity. The concern of the Prime Minister for Assam and northeast could be well understood from the fact that he addressed as many as 48 public meetings. He visited Silchar 4 times. On the other hand, Dr Manmohan Singh, who was Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, never visited Silchar.

In his second day speech in the Zero Hour today, the Silchar MP did not miss to raise the issue of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s dream project East West Corridor to link Gujarat started in 1998 which is still dragging its feet. The 31 km stretch of the super highway between Balacherra and Harangajao is caught in the vortex of payment of compensation to the land losers. He wanted to know the present status of the progress of the corridor. People of Barak Valley have extended their kudos to Dr Roy for his active participation in debate in his very first appearance.

Expectations are high from him and it is hoped in his subsequent presentation before the House, he would focus on the revival of paper mills of Cachar and Nagaon. He would also draw the attention of the Union Government to the public demand for a trauma centre and neurology department in Silchar Medical College and Hospital. For regeneration of employment for youths, industrialization needs to be taken up on priority basis.
