Tea workers and poor of Lakhipur subdivision get free rice

Silchar: It is free distribution of rice to tea workers of the tea gardens of Lakhipur subdivision of Cachar. Those poor and marginalized people living beyond the boundary of tea gardens are being provided rice at Rupee 1 per kg. Those holding AAY cards have been given 35 kg per family and those with priority household cards 5 kg per person. Both the benefits are for one month and covered under national food security act. Initiating the distribution of rice to beneficiaries on Friday organized by Binnakandie cooperative society, J R Lalsim, ADC, Cachar, and in charge SDO (Civil) of Lakhipur said, “The State government led by Chief Minister Sabananda Sonowal has always given serious thought to the welfare and well being of tea workers and poor. The schemes under AAY and PHC are part of it.”

Lalsim added to say free rice does not mean they are to refrain themselves from doing their normal duties in tea gardens. Their livelihood and sustenance depend mainly on working for the tea gardens which are their employers. Earlier, the rice per kg was Rs 3. She rather advised them to take benefit of the liberal scheme and at the same time dedicate more to their assigned works which will yield them more dividends. To begin with, 20 families under both the schemes got the benefit. On this occasion were present Mukesh Pandey, former chairman, Binnakandie cooperative society, its secretary Chandan Roy and the well-known journalist Ghurni Singh. The beneficiaries in one voice expressed their gratitude to the State government.
