Guwahati: The Assam High School Teachers' Association (AHSTA) staged a statewide protest in front of the Inspectors of Schools today against what they alleged was non-fulfilment of their demands.

Talking to The Sentinel, AHSTA president Khanindra Kumar Goswami said, "We had several talks with the government on our demands. The government assured us of fulfilling our demands. The government has not materialized its assurances."

He said, "Our demands are - addition of a special allowance amounting to Rs 300 to the basic pay of graduate teachers, regularization tutors' posts, 30-day earned leaves instead of ten days, keeping schools established in the name of renowned people outside the purview of the school merger plan, teachers and other employees who got appointment before February 1, 2005, from school management committees with approval from the department should be kept under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), bringing the high schools from where students took HSLC examination before 2006 under the ambit of the provincialization Act and provincialization of all schools which were under the ambit of the provincialization Act of 2018 but not provincialized in 2021, and humanitarian provincialization of the posts of teachers and other employees whose posts were not provincialized in 2013 as well as in 2021."
