Guwahati: The non-teaching staff of 33-degree colleges will observe a college-lockout agitation on August 8 in protest against what they said discrimination toward them by the government.

Talking to the media, Snatak Mahavidyalay Ona-shikshak Karmachari Santha president Ankur Kumar Das said, "The State Government privincialized 297 non-teaching posts of 33-degree colleges. The government handed over appointment letters to the non-teaching staff at a programme at Sarusajai in February 2021. However, the government is paying us only Rs 8,000-12,000 per month on the pretext of laws and rules. The government is paying us daily wage at fixed pay through the Provincialization Act (Amendment), 2018. It is discriminatory as non-teaching employees who got their posts provincialized before the amended Act get salaries as other government employees. The government imposed the Daily Wage Act, 1948, on us. During the distribution of appointment letters, the Chief Minister assured us of paying us gratuity amounting to Rs 10 lakh each. Many employees breathed their last without getting the promised gratuity. The Chief Minister also assured us of bringing us under the NPS (New Pension Scheme). That assurance also failed to materialize. We brought the injustice before the government but to no avail. We resort to this agitation as we have no way out."
