GUWAHATI: The Dibrugarh police are on a mission to curb illegal extortion activities from unlawful groups.
On Monday, the Dibrugarh Police Department launched an anti-extortion cell wherein victims can directly complain here and the authorities can take subsequent action against the perpetrators.
Helpline Numbers for assisting the public have also been initiated by the police department. People can directly contact the following numbers: 6026901264, 6026901270, 6026901265, 6026901273, and 6026901272.
"Anti extortion cell of @dibrugarhpolice has been formed for receiving complaints regarding extortion from genuine business entities and ensuring swift action. We @assampolice are committed to put #EndToExtortion," the Dibrugarh police wrote in their official Twitter handle.
The Tinsukia Police also joined the anti-extortion campaign by pledging to take strict action against those who are involved in illegal Chanda (Donations) in the district.
The Tinsukia police also took to their official Twitter handle to demonstrate their initiatives. "In order to provide assistance to the victims of "Donations" or "Chanda" by any organization, the victims can contact Shri Hiranya Kr. Dohutia, APS, DSP (S&I), Tinsukia in such incidents for needful action at 81360-74800 & 60269-01095", said their Twitter statement.
The extorters threaten and demand a ransom amount from genuine business companies. The Assam police are on the hunt for these cases and have been put on high alert.
