GUWAHATI: There are more than 18,000 Anganwadi centres in Assam without their own buildings. While some are functioning from schools, some are carrying out their activities in community halls and rented houses. The poor infrastructure in Anganwadi centres was highlighted during a written reply by State Women and Child Development Minister Ajanta Neog in the House today during the ongoing Budget session. She was replying to a question posed by MLA Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam.

In her written reply, the minister stated that there were 61,736 Anganwadi centres in the State. Out of these, 18,863 Anganwadi centres do not have their own buildings. Out of these 18,863 Anganwadi centres, 8,763 are operating from various schools, 417 are operating from community halls and 9,683 are operating from rented houses.

The minister also informed that the Assam Government had released funds for constructing 999 model Anganwadi centres in the State. While construction of 854 model Anganwadi centres has been completed, construction of the remaining centres is going on. Neog further informed that the government has also allotted fund for construction of 3,000 new model Anganwadi centres.
