Guwahati: In a tragic development, two more persons – both residents of Guwahati city in Assam – breathed their last on Tuesday, July 28, after losing a battle with the novel coronavirus.
"Two more #COVID19 patients, Smt Dulu Rani Sarkar (70) and Sri Hemanta Buragohain (50), have succumbed to their infections today. They both were from Kamrup Metro and admitted at GMCH, Guwahati. My prayers & condolences to their bereaved families", Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on Twitter, condoling their demise.
With the deaths of these two Guwahati residents, the number of fatalities associated with the viral disease in Assam is nearing the 100-mark. As on today, the number of coronavirus fatalities is 88.
Although the number of coronavirus cases has been rising rapidly, the number of recoveries has also risen at a brisk rate.
Yesterday alone, 1,348 cases of the virus were detected across Assam, out of which a "low" 155 cases were detected in Guwahati city – the largest urban centre of the state. Somewhat encouragingly, 21,742 tests were carried out, out of which 6.19% tested positive.
On the same day, 1,362 recoveries were detected in the state, raising the total number of discharged persons to 25,402. This has left the number of active cases at 8,085.
In another landmark development, Assam has completed more than 8 lakh tests on Tuesday, July 28. As of Tuesday, a total of 8,02,674 tests has been conducted in the state.
Sharing the news on Twitter, Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "My best appreciation for the hard work by Health Dept teams who continue their mission of tracking and tracing those who may be infected by the coronavirus. Today on July 28, our test figures crossed 8 lakh-8,02,674 to be precise. Well done. Request all to come forward to test." He also shared the lab-wise split-up of the number of Covid-19 testing."
