Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that out of the 48 COVID-19 deaths that have been reported in Assam, 25 have been detected in Guwahati city alone.
Sarma's revelation, which he made during a presser in Guwahati, comes at a time when the number of COVID-19 deaths in Guwahati has also been showing an upward trend along with the rise in the graph of cases. The city has registered over 500 cases for 3 consecutive days despite a stringent lockdown that has been imposed after the detection of positive cases at the community level.
"Looking at the level of threat posed by the COVID-19, we have decided to go for aggressive treatment so as to stop mortality. We sought to administer aggressive treatment in the moderate stages itself. We have 3 stages – mild, moderate, and critical. We have been informed by the AIIMS and Max Hospitals in Delhi that it is very difficult to bring a patient back, thus we decided to go for aggressive treatment in the moderate stage itself", Himanta Biswa Sarma said, adding that it was a collective decision of the 6 medical colleges.
He informed that the treatment of these patients consists of oxygen therapy, administering of medicines (dexamethasone, remdesivir, tocilizumab, and itolizumab). Sarma said that 83 patients in the state have so far administered a dose of remdesivir, out of which 36 patients have recovered.
Himanta Biswa Sarma also informed that to date 118 people were shifted to the ICU of the GMCH, out of which 35 people breathed their last. "Across Assam, 40 COVID-19 deaths have been reported among patients who were shifted to the ICU amid deteriorating health. 45 patients have recovered after receiving treatment at the ICU", said Sarma.
There are 6,815 active coronavirus cases in Assam today. To date, 19,754 corona positive cases have been detected so far, out of which 12,888 patients have been discharged after recovering from the dreaded virus.
