70% of multi-lingual dictionary of indigenous languages of Assam is over: ITSSA

GUWAHATI: Around 70 percent work of the multi-lingual dictionary of the indigenous languages of Assam is over, and the remaining work is expected to be completed by August this year. Rs 10 lakh of the Rs 25-lakh BTC-sponsored project taken up by the ITSSA (Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha, Assam) has already been released.

Talking to The Sentinel, ITSSA's secretary general Kamalakanta Mushahary said, "The multi-lingual dictionary will have eight languages – Boro, Deori, Dimasa, Garo, Karbi, Mishing, Rabha and Tiwa, besides English, Assamese and Hindi as the link languages. Rs 10 lakh of the Rs 25-lakh project has already been released. Under the Bhaxa Gaurav Scheme of the State Government, the ITTSA is going to receive a corpus fund of Rs 3 crore. The interest of the corpus fund can also be used for this purpose.

"Around 70 per cent work of the multi-lingual dictionary is over. We hope to complete the remaining 30 per cent work by August this year. In the interest of publishing a correct dictionary, we've formed an editorial board comprising three editors from each of the eight languages, besides former BSS (Bodo Sahitya Sabha) president Bisweswar Basutary as the chairman and former Karbi Sahitya Sabha working president Chikari Tisso as the chief editor."

A workshop to this regard was conducted at Kokrajhar last year and two other workshops were supposed to be held this year – one in Lakhimpur and the other in Dhemaji districts. However, the two workshops couldn't be held as yet. With the relaxation of lockdown, the ITSSA has resumed the work of the dictionary now. '
