AASU demands rollback of UGC’s Guwahati office shifting to Delhi

GUWAHATI: Regarding the University Grants Commission's (UGC's) decision to relocate the regional office of Guwahati to New Delhi, the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has opposed this decision.

The union's president-in-charge, Utpal Sarma, and general secretary, Shankar Jyoti Baruah, said UGC has opened up regional offices in the country to decentralize their work. To cover a greater area in the northeast region, the UGC established the Guwahati regional office, and the work was continually going on. Suddenly, the UGC announced a decision to shift the Guwahati office to New Delhi. This is an injustice for the colleges of Assam and the Northeast, as every education-related task for teachers and students will have to be taken to New Delhi, which is not acceptable.

Furthermore, the leader stated that their point was clear that the UGC's regional office should be in Guwahati, and the Assam government should take strong action. In this regard, AASU will write a letter both to the central and state governments.

It may be mentioned, that the UGC (University Grants Commission) closed its regional office in Guwahati. UGC's Joint Secretary, Professor Rajesh Kumar Verma, informed all principals of colleges in the Northeast in a letter that UGC's 'North Eastern Regional Office (NERO) in Guwahati has been relocated to the UGC New Delhi office. Hence, all the communications pertaining to NERO, Guwahati, are now sent to the New Delhi UGC office'.
