AASU demands stringent punishment for the accused involved in IDOL scam

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has demanded stringent punishment for the persons involved in the IDOL (Institute of Distance & Open Learning) scam.

The AASU pointed out that, for several years, the institute was offering 21 courses that were unapproved by the UGC (University Grants Commission).

"There have been allegations of anomalies of around Rs 40 crore. The Gauhati University authorities formed a one-man commission of retired Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia to enquire into the matter. Under his inquiry, the anomalies were unearthed. However, the committee's suggestions in the report have not been implemented by the GU authorities for the last 8 months. This proves the irresponsibleness of the GU authorities," said AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath.

AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah underlined that the GU authorities have meted educational injustice to thousands of students by allowing the IDOL to offer courses without the UGC's approval.

The AASU raised suspicion that the GU authorities didn't implement the commission's suggestions for the last 8 months.

It demanded that the involved persons should be brought to justice and be given stringent punishment. The students' union also demanded that the IDOL should be set up based on proper rules and regulations.
