GUWAHATI: Amidst the nationwide lockdown, the state government gave permission to open the liquor shops on April 12. Expressing disappointment in this regard, the All Kamrup (Metro) District Students’ Union said that the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) condemn the government’s decision of opening liquor shops at a time when the entire nation is fighting against COVID-19.
In a press release the All Kamrup (Metro) District Students’ Union said, “It is disappointing to witness that the same government who is showing no concern for students who are facing difficulty due to unavailability of books and other study materials, has put all possible effort to open the liquor shops.”
President and general secretary of the students’ union Kusha Rangpi and Dibyajyoti Medhi further expressed concern over the matter that even though the WHO has declared that COVID-19 doesn’t spread through books, the government has showed no concern to open book stalls just for one hour, and the same government has granted the permission to open liquor shops.
The students’ union further termed the decision of opening liquor shops as a homicidal act by the government and alleged that even after so many appeals and demands the government has not taken any initiative to provide the essential commodities at fair price.
Demanding the government to provide essential goods at fair price not only in city but also in areas like Chandrapur, Dimoria and Azara, the union demanded a high level investigation in case of the one-time aid of Rs.1000 to the poor declared by the State government.
The Union also claimed that the State Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury has failed on his part, and if he don’t move towards any active and positive result, the students’ union will further take out a demonstration programme against him.
