GUWAHATI: The All Assam Chutia Students' Union (AACSU) has condemned the failure to grant ST status to six communities of Assam even though it has been a long-standing demand of the communities concerned, and announced an agitation programme as a mark of protest.

AACSU's central chief advisor Khirod Saikia, president Mohen Bora and general secretary Raju Chutia said in a statement that it is matter of shame that Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been promoted as India's most popular Chief Minister, has displayed weakness in the matter of grant of ST status to the Chutia, Tai Ahom, Tea Tribes, Moran, Matak and Koch Rajbonghsi communities of Assam.

The AACSU leaders said that despite repeated demands and agitations, the process of granting ST status to the six communities have not got ahead, while 12 communities have got the status in five other States of India. They said that it is unfortunate that the Narendra Modi-led Government has not given ST status to the six communities of Assam.

The AACSU leaders announced a two-hour sit-in strike at every district headquarters on September 21 and a joint rally on September 25 in support of its demand for ST status.
