GUWAHATI: The All Assam Chutiya Students' Union (AACSU) on Monday staged a protest in the city demanding the grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and establishment of an autonomous council for the community under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at Cachal here in support of their demands.

AACSU chief adviser Khirod Saikia said that the BJP-led State Government has been solely indulging in politics over the issue of grant of ST status. He urged the State Government to stop this type of politics and said that their agitation will continue till their demands are met.

AACSU general secretary Raju Chetia said that the BJP had promised to grant ST status to six communities of Assam, including the Chutiya community, before the Lok Sabha elections of 2014. The BJP has twice formed Governments at the Centre and the State since then, but the party has not taken any step to fulfil its promise, Chetiya said.

He appealed to the Government to resolve the issue honourably and expeditiously.
