GUWAHATI: The All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU) has made it clear that it will consider to support those political parties which assure to address the issues of the community.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, AAGSU general secretary Numal Chetri said, "We will consider to support the political parties which promise to solve the problems of the community in their election manifestos and also give party tickets to Gorkha candidates."
Chetri stressed that in the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) promised to solve a total of six demands of the community in their manifesto. However, none of those problems were addressed, he added.
The AAGSU has demanded Gorkha Autonomous Council, solution to D-voter problems, ST status for 13 Gorkha communities, consideration of the Gorkhas as indigenous Assamese while implementing Clause VI, and Constitutional safeguard to the community. Chetri underlined that the Gorkhas are ready to give a 'proper answer' to the parties in the forthcoming elections that have betrayed the community.
