GUWAHATI: The Ambubachi Mela at the Kamakhya temple here concluded on Sunday with devotees thronging the Nilachal hill to offer their prayers as the doors of the shrine was finally opened this morning.

The throng of devotees included Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and his wife.

The Mela had started on June 22 amid certain restrictions put in place due to the ongoing flood situation in Assam and also due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the State.

It may be mentioned that the Ambubachi festival is celebrated during the monsoon season. It is believed that Goddess Kamakhya goes through her annual cycle of menstruation at this time. The temple is closed for three days beginning from the seventh day of the "Ashadh" month of the Hindu calendar until the tenth day, as part of traditional seclusion during menstruation.

On the twelfth day, the doors are opened ceremonially amidst much gaiety. It is believed that the fertility brought by the Goddess blesses the devotees and nurtures them.
