GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has demanded a judicial inquiry into the bike rally taken out by a section of BJP supporters without permission at Borsola in Sonitpur district on Wednesday when maintenance of social distancing was of prime importance.

In a statement issued to the media on Thursday, APCC general secretary and senior spokesperson Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya of the party said, "The laying of foundation of Ram Temple putting an end to centuries-old dispute was welcomed by all. However, on the pretext of the merriment a section of BJP supporters took out a bike rally without permission and that went out of control, leading to the incident at Borsola. At a time when religious institutions have been barred from holding festivals and pujas with mass gathering for the sake of social distancing, how come BJP supporters take out such rallies defying social distancing norms? Wasn't the incident an outcome of the defiance to the COVID protocol? Doesn't the Home department have its existence in the State? To hush up the failure on the part of the BJP government in the State, the State BJP president has blamed the Congress for the incident.

"A BJP minority leader even went to the extent of saying that APCC president Ripun Bora's instigation led to the Borsola incident. We demand the BJP to prove this allegation."
