GUWAHATI: Along with the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) staged protests across the State on Friday over the manhandling and detention of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi by Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday.

In Guwahati, the protest erupted after police personnel erected barricades at the entry point of Rajiv Bhawan while the Congress workers were observing Gandhi Jayanti. A scuffle broke out after the workers questioned the police personnel the reason behind putting the barricades. Hundreds of workers and police personnel clashed and the former broke the barricades and went out to the GS Road.

The workers raised slogans and protested over the manhandling of Rahul Gandhi by the Uttar Pradesh Police and burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister.

APCC spokesperson Imdad Hussain said, "Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated across 26,000 booths of the Congress in Assam. The protest over Rahul Gandhi's incident was held across the State under the order of APCC president Ripun Bora. To stop us from holding protest in Guwahati, the entry point of the Rajiv Bhawan was closed with barricades. We demand the UP government to apologise to Rahul Gandhi for the police's misbehaiviour."
