APCC moves CEO against BJP's Prasanta Phukan

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) moved the CEO (Chief Electoral Officer), Assam with a complaint of 'communal speech' against BJP's Dibrugarh candidate Prasanta Phukan.

The APCC said, "Our attention has been drawn towards an inflammatory and communal hate speech rendered by Prasanta Phukan at Chabua on March 20, 2021.

"In the course of his hate speech delivered in the Assamese language Phukan stated that if the people vote for the Congress then AIUDF leader Maulana Badruddin Ajmal will convert Assamese Hindu temples of worship namely namghars and mandirs to place of Islamic worship where namaaz will be performed and people will be ordered to do the same.

"Such communal statements not only vitiate the environment of holding a free-and-fair election, but also divide communities on grounds of religion, an act which is not permitted by the Constitution of India. Phukan, by giving such a speech in the public forum has intentionally and maliciously try to promote disharmony and feelings of enmity and hatred between different religious and linguistic groups and communities of Assam."
