STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI:

Drug Smuggling Cases in Guwahati, Assam: Sniffing the involvement of militants of Manipuri in the smuggling of drugs, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has made the Guwahati Crime Branch to hand over a drug-related case to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

The incident speaks volumes of the menace of drugs in Assam, the capital city of which has got the dubious distinction of being the transit route of narcotic substances for their supplies to the rest of the country.

According to police sources, L Sangita Rani hailing from Imphal West district of Manipur was arrested from an apartment at Solapara in Guwahati in July 2020. The Assam government ordered her detention for a period of one year in exercise of the power conferred upon Section 9(f) of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988.

Cash amounting to over Rs 74 lakh was seized from the apartment where she had been staying at Solapara here. A case (501/2020) to this effect was registered against her in the Crime Branch, Guwahati. What's significant is that she had also been arrested in connection with the supply of drugs by Basistha Police in 2019.
