Assam Agriculture Department to Plant 10 Lakh Saplings

GUWAHATI: Assam's Atul Bora formally planted a sapling at the Directorate of Agriculture premises here on Monday as part of the Chief Minister's Institutional Plantation Programme (CMIPP). The CMIPP was launched by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 16 and it will continue till August 15 next.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that about 10 lakh saplings of native plant species will be planted by the Assam Agriculture Department in institutional premises across the State. This initiative could help the State mitigate flood and erosion caused due to climate change, an official communiqué quoted the Minister as having said.

Bora also said such sapling plantation will also help in conservation of important native species, including medicinal and fruit plants.

Bora said that the export of native fruits and vegetables of the State is slowly increasing and the young generation is coming forward to join the agriculture and horticulture sector, which is a positive sign. As Assam was hit by the havoc of flood resulting in extreme damage of cropland, the Assam Agriculture Department's seed distribution of Sali seedlings under the Community Nursery will help the affected farmers' families, he added.

MLA Punakan Barua and Sushanta Borgohain, Additional Chief Secretary and APC to Government of Assam Ashish Kumar Bhutani, Director of Agriculture and officials of the Agriculture Department were also present on the occasion.
