Assam Association of the Deaf protests against Citizenship Amendment Act in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Led by the Assam Association of the Deaf (AAD), the deaf community staged agitation against the CAA Citizenship Amendment Act at Lakhidhar Bora Khetra here on Saturday. Over 500 deaf people participated in the agitation with placards in their hands, demanding to scrap of the Act.

Addressing the gathering, AAD general secretary Tapan Kumar stated that the deaf people who have participated in the agitation are mentally strong though they are physically challenged. Sarma criticized the government and said that the government has failed in safeguarding the interests of Assam in the forcible imposition of the CAA upon the people of the State.

Extending his support to the agitation of deaf, AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that it is appreciable that the deaf people are coming out every day against the CAA by ignoring their physical disabilities, and yet New Delhi and Dispur fail to listen to the voice of the protesters against the Act.

ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia said that the actual character of the government is exposed as they have failed to see the protest. He said that even after not being able to listen and speak the deaf people have come out and yet the government is adamant on its stance on the CAA. The others extending their support to the agitation include Satyen Deka, Nripen Malakar and many others who also spoke.
