'Jihadi sleeper cells active in sar areas'

GUWAHATI: The State unit of the BJP has asserted that jihadi networks are active in most madrassas located in the sar areas of Assam and urged the Government to keep a close over the curriculum of private madrassas of Assam, as is being done in the case of Government-funded madrassas.

Addressing the media at the party headquarter at Hengerabari here on Sunday, State BJP spokespersons Muminul Aowal and Ranjib Kumar Sharma said that there is every possibility of anti-national activities being carried out in the private madrassas of the State.

"The possibility of anti-national activities is strong because the majority of the students of these madrassas do not know about Srimanta Sankardev, Madhabdev and Lachit Barphukan. Instead, under the veil of religion they are taught about notorious terrorists of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon etc.," Aowal said.

Aowal and Sharma said that sleeper cells of the 'Al-Qaida in Indian Subcontinent' (AQIS) have sprung up in the madrassas situated in the sar areas and this process has been going on at a fast pace manner in the past couple of years.

Referring to the arrest of five jihadis from Barpeta district's Chakaliyapara Madrassa by Assam Police on Friday, the spokespersons said that this has exposed the wide network of the extremist outfit in majority of the madrassas in the sar areas of the State.

Launching a scathing criticism of the Congress, AIUDF and AMSU, the spokespersons said that these political parties have been appeasing the minorities and have never raised their voice or taken any initiative against the widespread of militant networks in the riverine areas. They alleged that the Congress, AIUDF and AMSU have always been working in tandem with the Islamic extremist organizations.

They further said that the Congress MP from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque, who expressed his desire to sacrifice his life for the Rohingya refugees, has maintained total silence on this issue.

The spokespersons said that AQIS has been working for creation of a 'Khalifa state' encompassing Cox Bazar and Dhaka city of Bangladesh, eastern India, Nepal's Torai area, Myanmar's Rohingya and the North-East region of the country. Ranjib Kumar Sharma further said the way the Hakkani Network is at work to spread Islamic extremism across the globe, the AQIS is also working steadfastly by using madrassas to set up sleeper cells in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and other States, along with Myanmar and Nepal.
