Assam Chief Secretary Alok Kumar claimed law and order situation in state is under control

Guwahati: At a time when there is a widespread protest going in and around the state against the much debated Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, Assam chief secretary Alok Kumar on Saturday stated that the law and order situation in the state is under control at Janata Bhawan in Dispur.

He further stated that it is quite challenging, however, the government feels that the people and the organizations have the right to protest. "But yes, taking off clothes and protesting is not be the right way," Alok Kumar said.

Addressing the media, Alok Kumar said that the administration is all set to face any situation that comes by. “In a democratic setup, people have the right to protest but, however, certain deviations are observed," adding, "The ongoing discourse should not degenerate into violence on the streets which will make the situation difficult to control. There is peace now and it is necessary to create an atmosphere for people particularly when the general elections are only two to three months away,” alerted Kumar today.

It may be mentioned that protests are going on in Assam for a very long time and it has been witnessing bandhs, blockades, nude protests, sit-in protests, demonstration of black flags to several BJP leaders and so on.

On the other hand, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia said that as many as eight cases have so far been registered in Assam over sporadic incidents of violence. “So far three cases have been registered in Tinsukia, two cases have been registered in Behali in Biswanath district. Another three cases have been registered in Nalbari district,” said DGP Saikia.

Furthermore, Director General of Police (Assam Police) added, “We have been looking for Abdul Matin following the Burdwan Blast case. In fact, we have arrested several people earlier from Barpeta region in connection to their involvement in the case. Abdul was absconding and based on a tip-off, he was arrested in Kerela by different agencies on Friday. He has been brought to Kolkata by the West Bengal Police. We will be sending a special team from Assam police to interrogate him.”

He also informed that if required he might be taken into police custody.

Also, talking about the aspirants from Assam who have joined the militant organizations operating in the state, DGP Kuladhar Saikia claimed, “There are certain incidents where we came to know about some people showing their interests to join the militant organizations. We have been verifying such cases time to time and arrested many aspirants and linkmen from various parts of the region. Our operations are on in all the sectors and districts of Upper Assam and Inter-state boundaries.”
