Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma felicitated Commonwealth Games (CWG), 2022 Gold medalist Nayanmoni Saikia at the Janata Bhavan here on Thursday.

After bringing laurels to the country by clinching two gold medals in Lawn Bowls in the recently ended Commonwealth Games, she reached Guwahati today.

She was welcomed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) by the officials of the Assam Forest Department where Saikia is currently employed as a constable.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Assam CM tweeted a video of her felicitation and also appreciated her and her team members for their achievements.

Sarma also assured her of all possible support from the Assam government and wished them a successful career ahead.

''A proud moment for me to welcome Nayan Moni Saikia on her way back home.

Her team's historic gold in lawn bowls at #CommonwealthGames2022 will inspire generations of sportspersons in Assam.

Assured her of all support from our Govt and wish her a successful career ahead,'' Assam CM tweeted.

Nayanmoni, a very popular face in the State lawn bowls, played a crucial role in her team's victory in the final where India defeated South Africa 17-10 in the lawn bowls Women's Fours final.

It was the third occasion when Nayanmoni turned up for India in the Commonwealth Games. She was part of the Indian squad in Glasgow and Gold Coast also.

Hailing from Tengabari, a remote village at Sarupathar in Golaghat district, Nayanmoni started her career as a weightlifter but a leg injury forced her to quit the game.

The 33- year-old athlete later joined lawn bowls and displayed some stunning performances in different national and international events. The athlete achieved two gold medals in the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship and also collected gold in the 2011 and 2015 National Games.
