Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will lead the state in paying the last respect to the three-time Chief Minsiter of the state late Tarun Gogoi as the last rites will be performed at the Navagraha crematorium in Silpukhuri area of Guwahati.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior Cabinet Ministers will attend the last rites of the long serving Chief Minister of Assam.

In-charge of Assam Congress, Jitender Singh will also be present at the funeral of the great leader. He is already accompanying the funeral procession.

Arrangements have been made to seat 1000 people inside the Navagraha crematorium premises. LED platforms has been placed so that people can view the last rites of their beloved leader being performed. The last rites will be performed with full state honour. Assam Police to play Lead kindly Light tune at the funeral.

Over thousand police personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth traffic movement and maintain peace and security as thousands come out streets of Guwahati to bid adieu to of Assam's most loved politicians.

Scores of people were seen lining up on both sides of the roads of Guwahati (as the funeral procession covered over 25 kms of the city. The body was taken to places of worship – church at Sixth Mile, Zoo Road Naam Ghar, Burah Masjid at Ambari, Sukreshwar temple on the banks of Brahmaputra and Ugratara temple in Latasil area before bringing it to Navagraha crematorium for the final rites) to get a last glimpse of their loved leader who served the state from 2001 to 2016 as the Chief Minister. Gogoi is credited to have put the state on the path of development and progress and brought back some peace and sense of security to the militancy-hit state.

Tarun Gogoi was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) in 1971, the 5th term of Lok Sabha. Koliabor was his Lok Sabha constituency till 1999 when he was elected as MP for the 6th term of Lok Sabha. He served six terms as MP from Koliabaor. In 2001 he was elected as the Member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Titabor and took over as the 13th Chief Minister of Assam. He was elected for three consecutive terms, since 2001. He remained the Chief Minister till 2016.

Gogoi was born in Rangajan on October 11, 1934.
