GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa has promised to build roads under each of the 60 wards of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in the next two years and announced that an amount of Rs 600 crore has been earmarked for the purpose.

The Chief Minister, who on Sunday participated in several election campaign meetings organized by the BJP for party candidates who are contesting in the ensuing GMC poll, gave the assurance regarding construction of roads while addressing the first rally of the day at Narengi. He informed that out of the total corpus, Rs 10 crore would be disbursed for construction works under the supervision of each ward councillor of the GMC.

Sarma said that along with other parts of the State, a noticeable change for the better has been visible in Guwahati as well during the last 11 months of the incumbent Government's tenure. He said that in view of the fact that Guwahati is the gateway to the North-East, the Government wants to utilize the GMC election to provide a new impetus for fulfilling the goal of development, progress and resolving the problems of the residents of the city.

He reiterated that a total of 60,000 families of Guwahati city would be covered under the Orunodoi scheme, i.e. 1,000 families from each ward.

The Chief Minister further said that local families residing on Debuttor land, hills land or annual patta land would be bestowed with land rights.

Sarma also informed that many Government commissionerates and directorates would be shifted to three 11-storeyed buildings at Betkuchi and the premises thus vacated would be converted into open spaces for the benefit of local residents.

The Government will also set up hospitals in each GMC ward, he said, adding that initially one hospital will serve two wards. There are around 10-12 hospitals in the GMC area as of now, he said.

Apart from Narengi, the Chief Minister attended rallies at Chandmari, Dakhin Sarania and Ganeshpara Bihutoli.
