GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday urged women to embrace motherhood at the "appropriate age" as it centrality results in medical complications. Speaking about motherhood, Assam CM stated that women should not defer to becoming mothers as the ideal age for motherhood is 22 years to 30 years.

Sarma was delivering his words at an appointment letter distribution function of 1,208 selected candidates at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati where he recapitulated the Assam government's commitment towards its firm measures against child marriage as well as pregnancy below the age of 14 years.

His statement comes in the background of the state government's conclusion to implement rigorous laws and bring forth the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to scrutinize child marriages and teenage motherhood.

Assam CM further added that thousands of husbands will be detained and could face life imprisonment in the upcoming five-six months as it is a crime and unlawful act to have sexual relations with a girl below 14 years of age.

Women who have not yet married should do it soon as, according to Chief Minster, God has created humans in a manner that there is an appropriate age for everything.

The Assam cabinet on Monday made a decision to book men who marry girls of such age bracket under the POCSO Act and will be arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

The conclusion was made to restrict the high rate of maternal and infant mortality in the northeastern state of Assam, whose foremost cause is child marriage, the Assam CM had announced after the cabinet meeting.
