GUWAHATI: Following a large number of teachers expressing consternation and launching a ‘let us teach’ campaign on social media after the education department asked them to organize events at school, the state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu hit back at them.

The teachers were irked after the education department issued a series of notices directing school teachers to participate in and organize activities relating to events and celebrations, even on Sundays and other holidays. This led to the teachers opining that classes were affected due to the activities.

However, their resistance to the state-mandated events and the explanation regarding the effect on students did not go down well with the education minister.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu took to ‘X’(formerly Twitter) to say, “ We have noticed reports that teachers and students have been involved in non-educational activities like Amrit Briksha, Amrit Kalah, Bir Gatha, essay on Lachit Barphukan, Nutrition Week etc. School is a person- building institution. It is the responsibility of the state to educate students in academic subjects and train them in discipline, humanity, ethics, nationalism, nationalism, social responsibility etc. to develop them as good citizens. Without healthy citizens, India cannot become a world leader.”

“Not everyone in school is a doctor or an engineer; there is no point in creating so-called educated people without morality, without patriotism, without humanity, without love of nation, without knowing their village, their land and their country. The present students are the ‘Amrit’ children of the ‘Amrit Kaal’ of India’s independence. These children are responsible for establishing India as a developed country by 2047. How can they fulfill that responsibility without participating in the ‘Amrit’ programs of the state at this time?”

The minister further said that the government wants to educate students about Ahom general Lachit Barphukan in a systematic manner, teach them to love their villages, as well as their land and their country, raise awareness against global warming and plant trees.

He stressed that these are part of the educational scheme. He also emphasized the importance of school projects, sports, culture, etc., when he said, “Projects are needed to develop the latent talents of students. Students must be made competitive to survive in the competitive world. Therefore, the great competition in sports and culture has been organized. Our aim is to develop today’s students as real people who truly love society, their land, their country, understand people as people, know the heroes, know the martyrs and understand the history of the country.”
