EVALUATION FORMULA ROW

GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has alleged that the State government is playing with the future of the seven lakh students. He stressed that the students' future will be affected as the mark sheets and certificates based on the evaluation formula will not be accepted in the recruitment for government jobs.

"The clause in the evaluation formula is a conspiracy to spoil the future of lakhs of students," alleged Saikia.

Further, he underlined that the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) and AHSEC (Assam Higher Secondary Education Council) in January stated that it is possible to hold the examinations by following the COVID protocols. However, the government was not willing to do the same, said Saikia.

"If the government was successful in conducting the Assembly polls, why did it fail to conduct the examinations?" questioned Saikia.

He underlined that 33,000 polling booths were set up for the people to cast their mandate in the recently concluded polls.

"Around 2 crore people exercised their franchise in the polls. On the other hand, for a total of 6 to 7 lakh students – 800 to 900 examinations centres were set up. I believe if the government sets up 5,000 to 6,000 centres then it will be possible to conduct the examinations by following the COVID protocols," said Saikia.

"The government said that the evaluation process will be the same as of the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). But SEBA and AHSEC don't conduct unit tests and half-yearly examinations like the CBSE. The SEBA and AHSEC schools don't have the required records of students for evaluation. These things were also revealed during the Gunotsav," he pointed out.

By referring to the Karnataka government's planning to conduct the examinations using MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions), Saikia said, "I hope that by following the COVID protocols, increasing the examination centres, and using OMR (Optical Mark Reader) sheets and MCQ, the examinations will be conducted."
