 GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria chaired two meetings with senior officials from the Water Resources, Public Health, and Engineering Departments at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. During the meeting, the officials provided an insightful overview of the ongoing flood management initiatives in the state. Besides the schemes undertaken, the department highlighted the challenges posed by floods and erosion in Assam. The presentation also covered the initiatives of the Flood and River Erosion Management Agency of Assam (FREMAA). Governor Kataria emphasized the critical importance of prompt and precise information dissemination in flood alerts. He stressed that timely and accurate information enables department functionaries to take proactive measures for the rescue and rehabilitation of flood-affected communities.

Moreover, the Governor drew attention to the lands in riverside areas that become inundated during floods but remain unused after the flood season. He proposed the idea of organizing temporary farming in these areas, inspiring farmers and giving a significant boost to the agricultural sector in the state. In the subsequent meeting with the Public Health and Engineering Department, the officials gave a detailed presentation on the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission (G).

The Governor asked the department to expeditiously implement the Jal Jeevan Mission in the state to provide the beneficiaries with piped water connections. He also asked the department to take steps regarding selecting the three best-performing districts for the implementation of the scheme and publicly naming the three districts that require improvement. This approach aims to create a competitive atmosphere and propel the scheme to meet its targets effectively. Regarding the Swachh Bharat Mission (G), the Governor complemented the satisfactory implementation of the scheme and reiterated the need for upgrading community toilets and drainage systems in villages to further enhance sanitation and hygiene standards.

Of Assam, PHE, and Water Resources Dept., Syedain Abbasi, Secretary to PHED and MD Jal Jeevan Mission, Kailash Karthik N, MD, SBM(G), Bikram Kairi, CEO, FREMMA Dr Jeevan B, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Secretary to the Governor Swapna Dutta Deka, along with officials of WCD and Raj Bhavan, were present in the meeting., stated a press release.
