Assam Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi Plants Saplings at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Synchronizing with the World Environment Day on Saturday, Assam Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi carried out a plantation drive in Raj Bhavan and led the state in celebrating the World Environment Day. He on this occasion also appealed to everybody to plant at least a single sapling this month to increase the green coverage of the earth and make it more habitable for the future generation.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Mukhi said, "Our existence is dependent on our environment. It is a matter of great satisfaction that the United Nations since 1972, used World Environment Day to encourage awareness among all stakeholders and the public in general to champion the cause of the environment and garner political patronage coupled with public action for sustainability and protection of our environment." The Governor also said, "To protect our planet from global warming, we need to plant more saplings and motivate our young generation, the students' community by setting an example before them. Our beautiful planet has sustained us and fulfilled our need in different ways. It is time for us now to work as a community and act responsibly to protect our environment from further degeneration."

Going along with the theme set for the celebration of the World Environment Day which is 'Ecosystem Restoration', the Governor also requested everybody to celebrate the day in introspection and taking a pledge to protect the environment and contribute in every possible way to safeguard the essence of the ecosystem. The Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry and officers and staff of Raj Bhavan took an active part in the plantation programme which was done adhering to COVID appropriate behaviour, stated a release.
