GUWAHATI: Assam Mountaineering Association's (AMA) Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition 2023 team left Guwahati on Tuesday. A large number of good-wishers gathered at the Guwahati Railway Station to bid them farewell.

According to the AMA, this is the first organized expedition to the third-highest peak in the world from Northeast India. President Droupadi Murmu had given the ceremonial flag-off to this expedition from the State Guest House in Koinadhora on April 7 in the presence of the governor as well as the chief minister.

"After reaching New Jalpaiguri, the team will enter Nepal and will stay at Kakarvita overnight. From there the team will reach Taplejung by vehicle with all the necessary items for the expedition. In the next phase, they will start trekking and will reach Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5200m) on April 20. After the establishment of another four camps in between the base camp and summit and proper acclimatization, the team will launch its final attempt between May 13 and May 18 for the summit." mentioned an official of AMA.

During the entire mission, a group of well-experienced Sherpa from Nepal will also assist the team to reach the top of Mount Kanchenjunga.

This expedition is fully sponsored by the Government of Assam through the Department of Sports & Youth Welfare. The seven-member main expedition team will be led by one of the most experienced mountaineers from Assam Manash Barooah, who was also the leader of 2015 and 2016's Everest Expeditions from Assam.

He is already in Kathmandu to complete the formalities with Nepal Government for the expedition. Another seasoned mountaineer and Associate Professor of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital Dr Jagadish Basumatary will bear the responsibility as Deputy Leader as well as Medical Officer in the team. They will be assisted by Upen Chakraborty as Joint Deputy Leader. Other climbing members are Kaushik Das, Bhaskar Baruah, Jayanta Nath and Sekhar Bordoloi.

The team offered a puja at the Kamakhya temple on 10 April prior to their departure for the expedition.
