GUWAHATI: The 'Assam Plains Karbi Adarbar' has demanded that the community must be included in the list of ST (Scheduled Tribes) under the Constitution of India. Stated this before the media here on Thursday, the organisation's secretary, Ajit Kathar maintained that this move is needed for spurring the development process among the plains Karbis in Assam.
Kathar added, "There are approximately three lakh population of the Plains Karbi community spread across nine districts of Assam. These districts are Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, and Cachar.
He further said, "As of date, the Dimasas of the plains have been already accorded the 'ST' status in three names."
Kathar further said that the organization hopes that the Plains Karbi community will progress further along with their Hills Karbi brethren. He added that the community looks forward for this positive scenario, especially in the post-peace pact phase. The peace parleys are scheduled soon between the government and the six militant organisations of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong districts.
