Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited Compensates For Death By Electrocution

GUWAHATI: Pratibha Saikia, w/o late Anidhar Saikia of Dhemaji District was handed over a cheque of Rs 2,50,000/-(Rupees Two Lakhs and fifty thousand) as compensation due to the death of her husband by electrocution. The compensation, paid by the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL), was handed over to Saikia in the presence of the Full bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission comprising of Justice, T Vaiphei, Chairperson and Member NK Bora and DK Saikia.

The Commission had taken suo moto cognizance of the incident from a news item published in the local daily, ‘ Amar Axom’ on July 18, 2017. As published, one Anidhar Saikia of Narauthan Balijan Gaon, Dhemaji district got electrocuted when he had climbed a tree to pluck elephant apple. Later the person died out of the injuries.

Notice was issued to the Managing Director of the APDCL to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased. The enquiry which was carried out by the Electrical Inspector, Tezpur Zone, was of the tentative opinion that the APDCL was guilty of contravening the Regulation 12 (1) & 64 (3) of the Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) regulations, 2010 as amended in 2015.

And this led to the death of the late Anidhar Saikia. The Deputy General Manager of the APDCL offered to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh. Pratibha Saikia, the wife of the deceased Anidhar Saikia appeared before the Commission on 10 June, 2019 where the cheque was handed over. The Commission expressed its gratefulness to the APDCL as well as the Superintendent of Police, Dhemaji and Anil Kr Sharma SP, Investigation Cell, AHRC for the cooperation extended, a press release stated.
